Humans have been like this throughout history. I think the internet, social media and the mainstream media are big reasons why it seems to prevalent in modern times. The mainstream media constantly highlights the crazies; the school shooters, the "Karens", skewing political coverage to keep the public at each others' throats. Social media has empowered everyone to be "celebrities", when in the past much of that behavior was only viewed by relatives and close friends. Now everyone wants to be an "influencer" and unfortunately, it's the idiots who are doing the most influencing. The internet used to be this vast, unexplored world where everyone was a digital Magellan but that world has grown exponentially smaller in the last 20 years and instead of explorers, people are conquerors; carving out their piece of digital land and then setting their followers off to plunder, pillage, and "cancel" a rival land owner.
It's at a point where you can't even go to the grocery store without the chance that someone has their phone on record just looking for something to stick on their YouTube/Instagram/Twitter account. Everything is at our fingertips (literally, thanks to smart phones) and the more outrageous, crazy, insulting, fear inducing something is, the more clicks, likes, and retweets it gets. It's like the National Enquirer and Weekly World News have taken over media.

Hey I totally agree with what you said kiethblacklion. And it's interesting to say that because I'm of the generation that grew up with the Internet at their fingertips (I was born in 2001). I'm now realizing that it's actually doing more harm than good trying to keep up in a world where your social media is where you live essentially. I've been trying to let go of the newer social media like Instagram, and I find it hard because that's how I communicate with my friends. It's actually why I decided to join spacehey in the first place. I hope that we realize this and make a move towards a more safer and healthier form of communication via social media.

I still prefer a PC over a phone or laptop; but then again I'm of the PC generation. I'll admit that I had gotten too "phone dependent" and as a result, I try to stop using it so much. For example, when my wife and kids go into a restaurant, I try to leave my phone in the car. The same when we go shopping. If I don't have it with me, then I won't be on it. With that said that, you can't deny how useful they are. I'm currently doing some home renovations, both at our house and my grandparents' house. Since my grandparents' property is in the mountains, there are no convenient hardware stores so I have to use my phone to take a photo of what I need to fix/replace then I take the phone into the hardware store, show the photo to a clerk and they help me find what I need.
Remember back in the late 90s/early 2000s, "concerned parents" were worried about how much time kids were spending on the internet. Before that in the 80s/90s, it was how much time kids were playing video games. Before that the concern was music and drugs. Like everything else in life, it's all about moderation.
