I remember having that briefly as I was growing up. remember being told to politely say "excuse me" (polite for get off the phone) and hang up.
was phone service cheaper if you shared with someone else? had phone company just run out of numbers?

No recall of this as I was born after the 18th century could have been just a US thing. or even regional. and I went to school (k-12) with Betsy Ross... I'm a few weeks older than her. ETA: she lived 3 houses down from me.
